Urogynecology
Urogynecology is a crossover between Urology and Obstetrics/Gynecology with a focus on female pelvic floor disorders (PFDs). This emerging subspecialty combines issues relating to the female pelvis. The classic issue that women experience is pelvic organ prolapse. This can lead to symptoms including urinary incontinence, overactive bladder, urgency and frequency, fecal incontinence, constipation, pelvic pain, pelvic pressure or painful intercourse.
Typically, these issues affect women who are post menopausal, but it can happen to younger women, especially associated with childbirth.
The most common complaint is urinary incontinence, that may range from leaking a little urine when you laugh or sneeze to being homebound because you fear having an accident in public. “It’s important that women know there is help. These conditions are treatable,” says Dr. Barker.
Treatment options include physical therapy, medications, biofeedback and minimally invasive, same day surgical techniques. It’s an advancing field, with more effective treatment than in the past. “With the subspecialty of urogynecology, we’ve gained a better understanding of these issues and surgical outcomes are improving.”
