Walsh Family Village
Providing a home away from home for out-of-town patients and their families is a very tangible way in which Avera McKennan is expressing its gospel values of compassion, hospitality and stewardship. The Walsh Family Village, which opened in August 2008, was funded entirely by donations. Each of the three buildings in the village has it own distinct purpose.
- The Casa de Carlitos Welcome Center measures 4,300 square feet and includes community spaces, gathering areas, a meditation room, and a caretaker suite. Two guest rooms are available for children who come to Avera McKennan for treatment through the Los Cabos Children's Foundation, as well as guests with special needs.
- The Nano Nagle Inn, a guest house with eight rooms for patients and their families, has a total square footage of 5,100. The inspiration for this project is the story of Nano Nagle, who lived in Ireland in the mid-1700s and cared for the aged, sick and poor. Nano Nagle was among the founders of the Presentation Sisters, who, along with the Benedictine Sisters, sponsor Avera.
- Avera McKennan has donated use of the third building, which is 7,400 square feet in size, as a Ronald McDonald® House for the families of pediatric patients.
Many patients require extended stays or frequent trips for treatments. This is especially true of cancer patients. Because expenses for fuel and lodging can be overwhelming, housing provided at low cost helps ease the financial burden placed on the families.
