Study of the Etiology of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Overview: Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease that is manifest by joint-based inflammation and bone erosions. The purpose of this clinical study is to determine if RA-related auto-antibodies are present in healthy subjects.

The long-term goal of this study is to identify, during the pre-clinical phase of the disease, those healthy individuals who are at sufficiently high risk for developing RA so that a rational primary prevention strategy can be employed.

Inclusion Criteria:

• Males and females, age 19 and older
• Diagnosis of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) by a rheumatologist based on American College of Rheumatology criteria
• Have at least one living first-degree relative (biological parent, sibling or child) who is age 19 or older and who has not been diagnosed with RA
