Avera Research Institute Participating in a Study on the Etiology of Rheumatoid Arthritis

SIOUX FALLS, SD (June 2007) – The Avera Research Institute is enrolling patients in a clinical study to identify healthy individuals who are at high risk for developing Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).

“The objective of this study is to determine if RA-related DNA is present in healthy subjects, to follow those who have the genetic makeup, and to determine if they predict the future development of RA,” notes Dr. Joseph Fanciullo, with Orthopedic Institute.  “Our hope is that we can use this study data to employ a prevention strategy.”

This study will evaluate data collected from both an individual diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and also a biological parent, sibling, son or daughter of the RA patient. The RA subject must be 19 years of age, formally diagnosed with RA, and be willing to provide blood and urine samples.  The first-degree relative must be 19 years of age, not formally diagnosed with RA, and be willing to provide blood and urine samples.  The first-degree relative will also undergo a brief exam by a physician, including a joint count, x-rays and a history interview. There will be no cost to the participants.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is thought by many to be genetically inherited.  Current evidence suggests early diagnosis and treatment may have long-term benefits if effective treatment is utilized.
