Avera Research Institute Participating in a Study on the Genetics of Rheumatoid Arthritis
SIOUX FALLS, SD (June 2007) – The Avera Research Institute is enrolling patients in a clinical study to map and to identify the genes that regulate susceptibility to Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).
“This study may not only map and possibly identify the genes that regulate susceptibility to Rheumatoid Arthritis, but it may also lead to improvements in the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis,” notes Dr. Joseph Fanciullo, with Orthopedic Institute. “We may also be able to use this data to collaborate with other major groups studying the genetics of Rheumatoid Arthritis.”
This study will evaluate data collected from family “trios,” which will consist of an individual diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and both of the individual’s biological parents, neither of which needs an arthritis diagnosis. The RA subject must be at least 19 years of age, and both parents must be living and willing to provide a blood sample. The parents are not required to live in the same area as the RA subject. In this study, the RA subject will undergo a brief exam by a physician, including a joint count, joint alignment, and mobility score. The subject and his or her parents will also provide blood samples. There will be no cost to the participants.
Rheumatoid Arthritis is thought by many to be genetically inherited. Current evidence suggests that approximately 10 separate regions on human chromosomes may contribute to RA susceptibility.
